Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya apparently “demanded” — asked for? — biriyani and cigarettes.

Like them or not, you have to give it to the Delhi police — they take a strong stand on such nonsense. No fear, no favors.

No preferential treatment to anyone say the Delhi police. This is a serious investigation concerning alleged anti national activity. Whether Khalid or Bhattacharya, we will not pamper anyone.

The rules are the same for everyone, a Delhi police official informed OneIndia. Apparently they were missing the food that they would eat on the JNU campus.

Meanwhile in an alternate universe far, far away…:

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday launched a vicious attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, after reports suggested that BJP legislator OP Sharma was treated with a vegetarian meal from a restaurant in Connaught Place before his brief arrest on Thursday.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted: “Free veg meal from a CP restaurant, several cups of coffee before arrest and letting him off within 15 minutes. VVIP.”

That’s a Zee News report. It suggests that asking how a man accused of violence in full public view is given meals of his choice is a “vicious attack” — the same Zee that is outraged at the sheer effrontery of Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya asking for biriyani.

And what of “rules are the same for everyone”? Not so much, vide this report:

“He is a high-profile legislator and that’s why we ordered food from the restaurant. It was just a human gesture,” said an officer of Tilak Marg Police station where the hospitality was extended to Sharma, adding he “was not an ordinary person”.
