The advantage of having a friend — in this case, Nakul Shenoy — who is adept at magic (though he, all the while, denies that there is anything called magic) is that you can over time learn to spot the moves even as the magician makes them.

Take cups-and-balls, a trick that dates back over 2000 years. It is one of the most ubiquitous of magic acts. Watch the legendary Penn and Teller perform the act:

Now watch a media magician’s version of the same act. First, I’ll show you the cups, and the balls, used in the act:

October 29: Army veterans renew their OROP stir. (This is the cup we are going to use to hide the magic balls).

October 30: Tents used by Army veterans for their protest uprooted. Following this, the veterans used the Congress office as a safe zone to voice their protest

And now, the trick. Watch carefully and see if you can spot the bait and switch. It should be easy after Teller showed you how it is done:

That is move #1. Then:

Which is like Teller showing you the same trick thrice, each time adding a slight twist. Then:

And, for a rousing finale, ladies and gentlemen:

See? By now, the original tinfoil ball — the problem veterans are facing — has vanished. And in its place is a whole other gigantic ball: politicised army veterans, and a venal Congress. (But hey, please don’t politicise issues.)

Bait, switch, reveal something else altogether. See? Though come to think of it, I can show you how it is done but you are still not going to be able to spot it — just like with Teller.

PS: I owe you guys responses to the comments you have kindly left in comments for my last two call outs. I promise to get to those tomorrow; tonight I am on chef duty for the wife, who decided that she wants to chill while I make the dinner. Be well.
